Studying maths until 18

This story has re-appeared in the news today

It is a complete daft idea and doesn’t reflect the educational reality of many children.  It just sounds like someone who found maths easier telling those who didn’t to ‘try harder’.

To improve numeracy, focus on better funding and better teaching to those already learning it

You may be interested to know that the new Academy of Mathematical Sciences is running a consultation and there would be an opportunity for a coherent vision in respect of who in our society needs what mathematical skills, and the suitability of our education systems for that:

Is it such a mad idea?  I often think we need something to combat the Arts dominance of the British culture – to say nothing about the lack of understanding of numbers within most politicians!
