To discuss any aspect arising from the Inflation Seminar of 18th May 2023 see https://www.betterstats.net/2023-inflation-seminar-agenda/
Is the NAO also concerned with modelling associated with AI?
You may be interested to know that the new Academy of Mathematical Sciences is running a consultation and there would be an opportunity for a coherent vision in respect of who in our society needs what mathematical skills, and the suitability of our education systems for that:
Errors in models have demonstrated limited assurance processes, now supported by updated guidance in the Magenta Book, but the weakness, and disinterest in my view, in assurance at board level remains a problem. So it is encouraging that NAO is going to produce guidance, and I hope in future more boards, and their auditors, will be looking to see higher standards.
Is it such a mad idea? I often think we need something to combat the Arts dominance of the British culture – to say nothing about the lack of understanding of numbers within most politicians!

It is a complete daft idea and doesn’t reflect the educational reality of many children. It just sounds like someone who found maths easier telling those who didn’t to ‘try harder’.
To improve numeracy, focus on better funding and better teaching to those already learning it
The ONS have just published their reconciliation of the mid year estimates with the 2021 census for Local Authorities in England and Wales showing 89% of LA’s were within +/- 5%! Is that good enough? Probably not for at least some of the 11% not within estimates (Coventry?, Cambridge?). See https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/populationandmigration/populationestimates/articles/reconciliationofmidyearpopulationestimateswithcensus2021atlocalauthoritylevel/2023-03-02
for details of the reconciliation.

Should Sir Ian continue as the National Statistician? See the Better Statistics blog at https://www.betterstats.net/should-we-be-looking-for-a-new-national-statistician-or-a-new-statistical-system/
What’s your opinion?
Great topic Tony. Have been thinking about this for a while. We need reform when it comes to these bottomless pits of national survey spending.
What does everyone think about the rise in popularity of ChatGPT? Their open beta is causing huge public interest, prompting users to communicate with the AI and offer it millions of opportunities to learn from real world data.
i think the covid-19 – infection survey (cis) is poor value for money at a cost of over a billion pounds. How should value for money be covered in the code of conduct?

Better Statistics are convening a one day conference to discuss aspects of the review of UKSA. Do you think the Office for Statistics Regulation should be removed from UKSA? If so where should it go?
What is the likely impact of Big Data?
What other changes would you make?
